My
clients had a blast catching some quality fish and land some great
reds. I was going to fish a little for flounder today, but my clients
wanted to battle it out with the bigger reds, so we stayed on the
deepwater ledges all day.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Funny
how one day we could only get a couple of bites when
drifting
the rocks for reds, and then today 6-17-2011, we whacked’em.
Woody,
Joy, Blain, Jack, and Douglas from Texas were on board today,
and they wanted to see what our inshore / nearshore fishing was
like here in Pensacola, and I did my best to show them what all
the fuss is about. We stopped and got some live bait and then
hit the Massachusetts for kings, but the bite there was a little
slow. We only had two bites; a nice 5 lb Spanish Mack and one
short King.

We decided not to waste any more time at the Mass, so I headed
to the pass for some redfish action. When I arrived I saw an
armada of boats drifting the pass, including several of my
captain colleagues and a few locals trying their luck on the
rocks. We
made our first drift and got nothing, but before we got
discouraged
we made another drift, and that’s when it turned
on. Redfish after redfish, with Blain being the first to
hook
up, and it was almost a keeper-- a 28” golden beauty. Bummed
that we couldn’t keep it,
but we took a few sweet pics and let
it go.

During
our next drift, Woody bowed up on something big. I had everyone
keep their baits in the water for a bit hoping for a double hook
up, but when we were a ways off the spot, I had everyone reel in
their baits while we watched Woody fight his fish. I even had to
maneuver the boat to help him get some line back. After a good
10-minute battle, Woody had his trophy 37” Monster Redfish. He
lugged the beast aboard for a few photos, and then we released
his fish and went back to drifting the pass. We hooked a few
more fish, but they kept putting us to the rocks, so I retied
everyone and gave it another go.
The
next few drifts produced some big boys!

Mom
(Joy) won the daily trophy with a whopper 41” Red. Joy battled
this fish for a good 15 to 20 minutes and was so happy she
almost cried for…wait for it… joy! What a great day with a
great family!

Report
June 15th- 2011
The
past few mornings just as the sun was rising over the
horizon, the Mega-Bite was on the flats with new
clients in search of big gator trout. Although we
found quite a few trout, they were not as big as I
would have liked that day, but we did catch a lot. We
caught a few fish on artificials, but we found the
bite was actually better with live pinfish under a
popping cork.
I
really like it when we fool the fish into hitting
artificials, but when I’ve got kids on the boat that
may not quite have the skills that a more seasoned
angler has; then live bait is the ticket. It’s not
always about catching that trophy fish, but it’s
about making sure my clients have fun and enjoy their
fishing adventure. When the child says to their
parent, “I caught 20 fish,” they are not thinking
about the size of the fish. The excitement is that
they got to feel the pull of several fish on the end
of their line, and that they could not keep count on
how many were caught. Mom and Dad don’t mind that
they have been “outfished” by their youngun,
because those smiles are memories that outweigh any
trophy fish!
I’ve
been catching good trout in both upper Escambia and
Blackwater Bay and I’ve been down on the sound
hitting the flats for trout and reds. Both areas are
holding fish, but I’ve seen a few better fish in the
upper bay systems. We’ve gotten some rain the past
few days, which is great, but we need a little more to
push those bigger trout down onto the flats of the
sound.
When
I’m not out catching the trout, I’ve been out in
the gulf catching a few kings. We don’t have to
venture too far off the beach to catch these fun
fighting fish.
And lastly, I’ve been in the pass catching a few
slot and oversized redfish on both live and artificial
baits.
It’s
been a hot start to June with temperatures well into
the 100’s some days, but the fishing has been
outstanding both
I’ll
be out a lot over the next few weeks hitting the flats, gulf,
and the pass for whatever my clients want to hook up.
Check
back for more fishing adventures on the Mega-Bite.

Report
June 4th- 2011
Spring
is defiantly over with temps reaching 100 degrees the
past few days; I can officially say that summer has
arrived. I’ve been doing more flats fishing the past
6 weeks. Many trips have been in upper Escambia Bay
& Blackwater Bay and I’ve been catching a lot of
trout, some big and some small, but it’s not the
size it’s all about having fun. I’ve also been
down near the beach on the flats in both Big Lagoon
and Santa Rosa Sound and the speck bite there is
really picking up.
I
grew up fishing for bass back in Indiana and I only
used artificials. This season, I’m trying to use
this same strategy here. I’ll still be fishing the
pass and gulf from time to time with live baits when
my clients want to go out, but when they want to fish
strictly with artificals, I’ll happy to show them
some great inshore fishing. I will use a variety of
lures on my charters from hard baits to soft plastics,
including MirrOlure, Sebile, Gulp, & Bass
Assassin.
It’s
been very hot the past few days and it has affected
the fishing a little. I’ve found that to get the
strikes, you will need to slow down your presentation.
Whether you are using a Gulp or a suspending twitch
bait, work it a little slower and you’ll hook a few
more fish. Typically you would use a slower
presentation when it’s cold out, but when the
weather gets this hot so early, the fish haven’t had
the chance to acclimate, and they sometimes like a
slower presentation. Remember to always have a
top-water plug tied on, because everyone enjoys a good
top-water bite.
I’ve
also been fishing the pass a few times over the past
few trips and we’ve caught some big reds. Baits used
were Mann’s swim baits on a 1oz
jig head and medium pinfish on a Carolina rig.
I’ve
got a few more trips lined up, and I’ll write up
another report in a few days.
It’s
getting hot out so remember to take breaks and drink
plenty of water and wear sunscreen.
Till
the next adventure…
